SRARNZ Lizard Conservation Toolkit

The SRARNZ NZ Lizard Conservation Toolkit 2012 is a comprehensive resource developed for the conservation management of the lizards of New Zealand.

This toolkit outlines processes relevant to lizard management and is intended to provide an overview only.  It does not contain sufficient detail to be considered best practice. For best practice advice on monitoring herpetofauna please see DOC Herpetofauna Inventory and Monitoring. Best practice guidance for developers, including for salvage operations, is under development by the national Lizard Technical Advisory Group.

The Toolkit includes primers on:

  • The conservation and resource management legislation in place for lizards and their habitats;
  • Standardised surveying and monitoring methodologies;
  • Predator/ pest control, habitat management, translocation practices and funding options for the benefit of lizards; and,
  • Further resources, including sources of further information, organisations and key contacts, and references.

This toolkit was prepared by Peter Anderson (project leader, Auckland Council), Trent Bell (EcoGecko Consultants), Simon Chapman (Boffa Miskell) and Keith Corbett. This project was funded by the Biodiversity Advice Fund, which is managed by the New Zealand Department of Conservation.
